Leanne Rockliff is a Vancouver-based artist that creates using acrylic paint or found materials. Her source of inspiration is both the travel she has done and the local urban environment in which she lives.
It was not until about 2019 that she seriously considered painting as a career. Though a History degree and more than a decade in finance might not be the traditional path to artistry, it has led her to the creative space she now finds herself in – creating paintings for exhibitions and producing commissions.
Her primary work now is cityscapes and capturing the urban environment in a vibrant and idealized way. Its as though she’s come back to something from her childhood, as she used to sketch housing plans when she was young. She has previously done quite a bit of mixed media pieces as well, exploring her personal relationship with memory through energetic and bold mark making and forms. Each piece showed tension to be felt with a foremost feeling of resolution felt in the end. Strong, bold lines and shapes and supersaturated colour are techniques used. Leanne’s aim is to capture fleeting moments in time that to someone, somewhere sparks something magical. This idea is consistent in which ever style she is creating, whether it be city scenes or abstract pieces.

I commissioned a painting from Leanne in April 2022 for my Mom’s birthday at the beginning of July of that same year. Not only was the painting completed in plenty of time, but Leanne made an effort to personally deliver the painting. She was communicative throughout the process and sent pictures of the development to ask for feedback on the colouring, size and portion.
The painting was of my family cottage and it was gifted from my whole family to my Mom for her 70th birthday. The painting was realistic, vibrant and most importantly true to life. We lost our cottage last year due to weather conditions and Leanne was able to bring the memories back to life through the painting. When my Mom opened it she was overwhelmed with emotion as it was such an important part to our family. Leanne was able to represent all of this and paint a true likeness of the cottage based upon one picture shared. The painting represented long summers that revolved around family time full of laughter, love and togetherness, and it is now hung proudly in my Mom’s living room. I have already commissioned another painting and would recommend Leanne to anyone interested in preserving memories, special events or people within a painting.
